Pinout
An open-source runtime that gives software and AI agents a common, safety-aware interface to physical hardware—from ESP32s to lab instruments and robots.
Overview
Pinout is an open-source runtime that gives software and AI agents a common, machine-readable interface to physical hardware. Instead of learning each device's GPIO library, vendor SDK, or wire protocol, an agent can discover and invoke typed capabilities such as gpio.write, motion.move_to, or temperature.set.
The project is building the layer between intelligence and machines, with deterministic schema validation, observed-state checks, policies, leases, operation tracking, and a control journal before a request reaches a device.
What it includes
- A TypeScript runtime, SDK, CLI, MCP adapter, and local
pinoutddaemon. - Python SDKs and ESP32 and MicroPython bridge firmware.
- Simulators and protocol adapters for Modbus, SCPI, MQTT, serial, TCP, and more.
- Safety-oriented execution primitives for approvals, idempotency, budgets, cancellation, and halt coordination.
Current status
Pinout is early open source. The repository contains compile- and simulator-tested paths, but its hardware-support matrix deliberately distinguishes simulated and host-validated work from physical hardware-in-the-loop verification.
